Awakening the Evangelical Church to Domestic Violence and Abuse in its Midst

Thursday Thought — Untwisting Scriptures Used Against Abuse Victims

Abuse victims are often keep in bondage by the use of scriptures that their abusers and other ‘c’hristians have twisted, misapplied, and misused.  We have compiled a list of posts that address some specific scriptures and/or biblical concepts that are commonly used against victims.  This new list is titled “Untwisting Scriptures Used Against Abuse Victims” and can be found on the SCRIPTURES tab on the top menu bar.  Here is a sampling of some of the scriptures covered in the posts:

Suffering: Job 1-2

Judging others: Matthew 7:1

Church Discipline: Matthew 18

Anger: Ephesians 4:2

Headship: 1 Corinthians 11:3

Thinking excellent thoughts: Philippians 4:8

Submission: 1 Peter 3:1-6

Trials: James 1:2-4

Thank you ACFJ staff for your great work and for how much of it you do. The moderated responses are a tremendous gift to those of us that needed to be heard. We needed a safe place to share our stories without clucking tongues of judgment or disbelief. “oh that can’t be true” when sharing what a church did to an abuse victim is a slap across the face and the mentality of those that don’t want to know what humans, in the name of God, are capable of.

We don’t find that here, that judgement “well what did you do to bring that on yourself” but instead those that understand what it actually means to be a victim of terrorism in the home. For every response you read and moderate, you’ve put time and thought and allowed us a great freedom of honesty that few of us experienced before. I’m deeply grateful and find the more I can say what happened to me without a slap across the face for doing so, the freer I feel. Many false beliefs have been deconstructed here too. the truth, it sets a captive free. Thank you, and may the Lord be gracious to this ministry and increase its influence.
